Story Writing

Story is the actual life of movie / game / animation etc... With out story there is no game/movie. The story may be small or big but with out it, they are nothing. The story / concept  drives the life of a game / movie. So, their is always a prominent role for a story board writer in game / movie production.

Writing just a plain story is not a big deal for any one. But writing a story in such a way to bring interactions in the middle of story without breaking the user / audience interest and creating / placing the puzzles accordingly is the main challenge. So, for a story board writer in games industry should have additional knowledge and creativity to write such a story which makes the user to stick to his play with out rising out of his seat.

As every one is aware of the fact that story telling is not a simple job for every one to handle. It's again a unique art and very few people has such talent. Story writing involves  many ingredients such as concept, screenplay, point of direction(first person /  third person narration), twists, time line, key characters etc.... Stories can be of wide varieties such as drama, suspense, thriller, horror, science friction, devotional, action etc... So, one must create a story of his choice type but with proper level of puzzle ingredients.

There are a number of games that got huge market just because of proper story board. Games such as Prince of Persia, God of War, Max Payne, Just Cause, Need for Speed, Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider etc... were some of all time big hits. Even in the area of casual game development games like Mario, Donkey kong, Contra, Tekken, DigDug, Pacman etc...were some of the all time biggest hits that collected huge money and still collecting. The story may be small or big  but it is all the point that how interactive way  the puzzles were involved in the story.

A good game play story writer has a great demand in today's world. A huge number of job opportunities are creating every day. So if you are interested in this kind of job then focus on how to develop story writing skills for games. It's always better to refer lot of games available today in the market which will help in creating new methods / puzzles in the story that you write.

Logical and Creative Ideas

Hi there,
Lets get today into the discussion of most important things to create a  game content. As we all are aware of the fact that game is nothing but a puzzle created with many integrated logics and presented with creativity. So, from this fact we can know how important are these 2 things, that is "logics" and "Creativity". In order to make games one should know how to bring out game logics with creative ideas.

Many of us are very good puzzle solvers but only few will be good puzzle creaters. This variation you can easily find out. This is because the good puzzle creators are the best puzzle solvers. It is very obvious from this that in order to increase our skill level in puzzle creation, we should make our brain fed by ideas by solving more and more puzzles every day. And how does this happen? Only just by playing a lot of games. I have seen many sites display that they a category of games called "puzzle games". But it's really pity for such statements. Because any game that is made or build uses a puzzle or we can say game is a puzzle. so their is no such thing that they are puzzle games and non puzzle games. Some games may have lot of puzzles to solve and some may have less. It all matters with how beautifull and interesting the puzzles are made.

The game may be a simple casual game to highend graphics based 3d game but it is common that a set of logics are required to create to make game. If the game logic is good it goes'nt matter whether the game is a casual game or hifi 3d game. So a game developer must have good level of observation along with creation.

Why Observation? Observing other game ideas will help in creating new type of puzzles every time. It is very tough for some one to create from scratch an out and out topic and very new idea which does'nt exist before. Despite creating new is nothing but taking parts of existing ideas and changing their proposions of logics and mixing them in a way to produce a wide different idea from others. In order to make such unique different ideas one should observe lot of other ideas.

for example:
you are planning to cook a new dish and present to customers so that to make a good business out. If you have less ingredients then the possiblity of making a very wide creation will be less. But if you have a lot of ingredients then you will be sure to create a very unique dish. So,in the same way game developers also needs to observe and learn more logics to produce good games.

Please check the free game sites post so that you can make use of this to learn more.

Essence of Audio/Music in Gaming

Hi there,
We have been discussing over various topics on gaming over the period. Now I would like to bring the topic of Audio/Music in gaming, which is very essential part. Lets say, you are playing a game with out music / audio for  an hour and now start playing a game which has audio then you will feel a beautiful difference which is nothing but audio. Audio / Music gives life for the visual applications like games, movies etc... So, like in movie production, in gaming also their is always an audio department involved.

If you wanna be a good game maker then you should have a good knowledge or taste in music. In general most of gamers are music lovers. You can always check this out. Most popular games like Prince Of Persia, Need for Speed, F.E.A.R, God of War, Sim City, Age Of Empires, etc... all these games have a prominent importance of music in their games.

How does this work in gaming? if you have this question then here is the answer. The game music is a combination of background music, event based music tracks, Voice overs, Audio effects etc.... Working on music is the most lovable and easiest thing than any other part of game. All you have to do is to find the right music for your game and then start working on it.

Their are lot of free tools available for editing, mixing and compositing musics. I recommend to start with open source tools.

  • For Music composing use free tools like "Easy Music Composer","Virtual Music Composer"
  • For Music recording and editing use free tools like "Audacity"
Its quite easy to learn and use this tools and more over freeware so no license issues too.

Your game may be racing, strategy, puzzle, action adventure, horror, scientific etc... music identification is based on screen play and over all concept. Adding music is not just an ingredient, but it is the voice of your game.

Regarding job opportunity in game music their are openings like

  • Music Technician
  • Music Composer
  • Musician
  • Music Director
Roles are pretty much like in movie industry and they get really paid well.

Essence Of Physics in Gaming

Hi there,
Lets speak about the use of physics in gaming today. Most of the games that are developed today are having the promenent part of physics involued inorder to have good gameplay feel. Physics brings the realism to the virtual game world (computer graphics world). The games which are made out of no physics were always bounded to specific borders so that to avoid complexity in game play. But now a days all games meet the basic physics rules so that player is given the joy of real game play.

In either the case like 2D games or 3D games physcis have its importance. The very essential part comes at collisions between the object's that are created inside the game. Simple box physics to complex physics calculations are used to bring the realism in games.

So one should have basic knowledge in physics so that he/she can start working on required physics in games. Basic physics concepts such as mass, gravity, force, damping, elasticity, torque etc... calculations should be learned throughly.

In the later stages during the project development as per required one can learn the deeper physics concepts to bring out the quality output.

Areas Of Use:
  • Realistic Simulation development
  • Realistic 3d Games
  • Realistic 2d Games
  • Realistic Virtual Walks
The most popular physics engines that run in today market are ODE and Ageia Physx. ODE is breifly called Open Dynamics Engine and is completly an open source engine. While Ageia Physx is developed by nVidia company. Ageia Physx is more capable of calculating higher physics values keeping higher cpu clock rates while ODE can support proper basic physics and can support complex physics at lower cpu clock rates.

As a starter one should start with ODE so that it will be convenient in learning complex physics calculations at later stage.

for more info please do visit the following link.

note:
Almost all Game engines provide either ODE physics or Ageia Physx.

Gaming Colleges/Institutes in India

India has been focusing on emerging technologies like Video Games, Simulations, online apps etc... now. There is lot of demand in the market for some one who persue a degree or relevent knowledge in game production / programming / art. Since it is a very new technology for us their are only a very few colleges or institutes that give a good level of knowledge for the candidates. Some of the institutes which maintain good infrastructure are:
for more information visit the relevent web links specified.

It's not recommended complsory to do a gaming course but taking up so in a good college helps in understanding the basics before going into production.

Essence of Maths in Gaming ( chapter 2 ) for beginners

It's quite clear to most of all that gaming is just a logic written and driven by means of simple math calculations. Games is all about calculations, to meet points, to achieve a target, to meet constraints etc.... Every component of gaming has maths involued in greater portions. So, one should be good at math basics before starting game programming.
Dimensions, positions, values, logics etc... are all actual entities that keep calculating through out game while visuals give you moke or representation of that. Knowledge on the following is very crucial to begin in game programming.
  • Geometry
  • Vectors
  • Matrices
  • Algebric Equations
  • Calculus ( not complesory )
  • Permutations and combinations ( not complesory )
Geometry helps in defining the visual entity into math formula. Vectors help in defining the position, scale and particularly the direction in the 2d/3d game space. Matrix format is generally used to store the actual vector datas of the visual game entity. Algebra is used in defining specified paths, tracks etc... rest are mostly used in defining / writting the game AI nature to create smartness.

So we strongly recommend people to have good grip on this topics before stepping into game programming.

Basic Knowledge ( Chapter - 1) For Beginners

One should  aware of basic things that we use in every day life so that you will be clear when implementing games/simulations/virtual walks etc... Let me tell you in the following manner.

1) How do you find a person/thing in the real world?
a) By finding the person's/thing's current location.

2) How do you call a person/thing in the real world?
a) By the person's name/ thing's name.

3) How do you identify any thing in the real world ?
a) By common properties such as dimensions, color, smell and other properties

4) How do you find directions in the real world ?
a) By comparing our head direction with respect to sun's direction.

This above said questions look very funny but always remembering this will help you to start efficiently in gaming. In gaming all you need to know is where to create an object, how to place it(in which direction), what dimensions are to be set and what properties are to be given. This is the most common step that take places for every object that is implemented in every game.

In game development, you always need to know how to track an object, how to get its direction, scale, properties and change them on need. Most common terms used in gaming are
  • Getposition ( to find the current position of an object )
  • SetPosition ( to set the position of an object )
  • Getdirection ( to find the current direction of an object )
  • Setdirection ( to set the direction of an object )
  • GetTransform ( to find the current transform of an object )
  • SetTransform ( to set the transform of an object )
  • Getscale ( to find the current scale of an object )
  • Setscale ( to set the scale of an object )
Any way we will discuss in details of gaming in later sessions. But as a basic one should know the above said things as they are the key things for game development on any platform.

How/where to Start in Gaming ?

One should know where to start his/her career in gaming. Some may be very creative in creating puzzles, some may be good at solving puzzles, some may be good at art and etc... Depending on his/her own area of interest one should make a clever choice in gaming in order to head up with out any break in future.
The main question is that when should one start a career in gaming? Well, this question can be answered in more detail manner.
For someone to start as an artist in gaming/animation should accomplish art related degree so that when takes up specialization he/she feels comfortable and learns faster and proper. The art related degrees are B.Tech multimedia, B.C.A(Bachelor of Creative Arts), B.F.A(Bachelor of Fine Arts), Diploma in Multimedia, Diploma in Fine Arts.
For someone to start as an programmer/technologist should accomplish science degree so that when he/she goes to game development specialization, could understand the actual underlying concepts clearly and can further learn and practice the methods of development efficiently. The science related degrees are B.Sc Computers, B.Tech/B.E Computer/IT, IIT Computer/IT, etc...
For the people who are interested in Game Testing should do diploma in testing tools so that basic knowledge in testing can be useful to start a fresh career.I also have a very good suggestion. that is you play more games and try to screw the game in all possible ways and find out the mistakes/mischievous things in game play. Also participate in gaming competitions when ever it is possible.
Once you are out of your degree, the very first step is to find where to do specialization so that company's will take up you. Specialization is recommended as it lays a very strong base to one's success in future career.
For artist he/she should take up either one of the following as choice of specializing.
  • Texturing
  • Modeling
  • Rigging and Animation
  • Lighting and Rendering
  • Concept Art ( B.F.A people will come to this category mostly, hence no specialization required)
For a programmer, their is no such sub choices in particular but needs to concentrate on all elements of gaming. Specially a programmer should have the following skills.
  • Good grip on any one language
  • Good debugging skills
  • Fast learning skills
  • Adoptable to new development environments.
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Command on Maths, Physics and Basic Art.
For a Game Tester, he/she is expected to be more avid towards gaming and should learn manual testing procedures as well as automated testing procedures.Specialization in testing is a good for any one before going into game testing. Similarly, their are some more fields in gaming like
  • story writing,
  • Game designing,
  • Producing,
  • Marketing
  • Audio making.
Most common tools/software's used by different people during game development are listed below.

For Art:
  • 3DsMax, Maya, Soft-image,  Blender, Z brush, Adobe Photoshop etc....

For Programmer:
  • DirectX, Opengl, ODE, Ageia Physx, Opengl, Game Engine(not compulsory). OpenAl, etc....
 For Tester:
  • Test Director, Win-runner, Load Runner, Q.T.P,etc...
Their is an excellent idea for some one to start career in gaming, that is just join bachelor's course in gaming if you are a +12 passed person. For some one who completed Graduation should go for masters degree in gaming.

I hope this post has cleared most of your basic doubts. In my next post  I will give the information about colleges around the global where one can do graduation/post graduation in gaming and step into gaming industry efficiently.
